100% Pure Ouessant Wool DK

£9.99

Our Limited Edition yarn has been produced from our wonderful Ouessant sheep, which are a rare breed of heritage sheep originally from the island of Ouessant in Brittany. Ouessant sheep are renowned for their character, hardiness and their status as the smallest naturally occurring breed of sheep in the world.  Some suggest that the breed was introduced to the island by the Vikings and they were found only on Ouessant until the 19th Century. The inhabitants raised the sheep for wool - from which they wove their traditional, dark-coloured clothes. They were brought to the UK in the early 2000s and remains on the EU and UK lists of ‘At Risk’ rare and heritage breeds.

Our sheep are black, brown and white (which are the original Ouessant colours) and have a thick fleece of long wool with a dense undercoat. Due to the double and triple coats on the sheep it has produced a rather strong yarn but also retained softness which is highly sought after. The unique mix of natural colours also makes the wool particularly desirable.  We have been informed that our wool is the only Ouessant mill-spun wool in existence and therefore a very unique and bespoke product with a limited amount of wool produced. Every year we produce the wool we will expect different shades depending on our flock and fleeces available. This will mean each year will have its own unique vintage colour.

Your wool will be gift wrapped in recyclable packaging. Parcels will be sent by Royal Mail Tracked 48.
