Here at Our Life At The Barn, we take great care of our beloved ladies.  Our hens are a variety of hybrid chickens and all have their own names and special personalities. Although we are relatively new to chicken keeping we are strong believers in animal welfare and looking after our animals with compassion and care.  We believe in free-range chicken keeping (although this year has been particularly challenging with the housing restrictions due to Avian flu) and what better place to raise our free-range hens than on the rolling hills of South Devon?  Here they are allowed to forage and feast on all the goodies that they can naturally find.  In the winter months, their diet is supplemented with caddies full of veggies and healthy snacks like butternut squash, sweetcorn and cabbage.  They are also a bit partial to porridge with blueberries and corn especially when it’s cold. In the warmer months, their special treat tends to be a succulent watermelon.

Breeds we keep are:

Devon Blue, Devon Bronze, Light Sussex, Silver Sussex, Rhode Rock, Amber Rock, Speckledy Gold, White Leghorn, Lohmann Brown, Blue Maran, Jubilee Sussex & Silver Duckling Leghorn.

You can see the benefit of how we raise our hens in the quality of the eggs.  We take great pride in the welfare of our chickens and believe that you will be able to see and taste the difference in eggs with their vibrant deep orange yolks and fresh whites that make the best-poached egg or delicate meringue.
